Methylphenidate
A central nervous system stimulant synthesised in 1944 in Basel by chemist Leandro Panizzon and licensed in the United States in 1955. It is used for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, labelled standards, nitrosamines and other impurities.
Did you know?Panizzon tried it on himself and on his wife Marguerite, whom he called Rita: she played tennis and found it helped her on the court. The medicine was later named after her nickname.
