Mitomycin
An antitumour antibiotic produced by the soil bacterium Streptomyces caespitosus, isolated in Japan in the mid-1950s: it cross-links the two strands of DNA, preventing it from copying itself, and is used against several cancers. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, labelled standards, nitrosamines and other impurities.
Did you know?It also has a role in eye surgery: applied during operations for glaucoma or pterygium, it curbs the formation of the scar tissue that would spoil the result.
