Pethidine
A fully synthetic opioid analgesic, obtained in Germany in the late 1930s and in medical use since 1943; for much of the 20th century it was one of the most prescribed opioids for acute pain. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, labelled standards and other impurities.
Did you know?Chemist Otto Eisleb was studying it as a possible anticholinergic drug: it was Otto Schaumann who discovered its analgesic properties. It is the prototype of a large family of analgesics.
