Phenolphthalein

A dye of the phthalein family discovered in 1871 by Adolf von Baeyer: colourless in acid, it turns pink to fuchsia in alkaline solutions and is the classic indicator for titrations. For much of the 20th century it was also used as a laxative. This family brings together the active ingredient and other impurities.

Did you know? Its laxative effect was discovered by chance in 1900, when the Hungarian government tried adding it to white wine as a marker: the taste did not change, but drinkers soon noticed.
