Physostigmine

An alkaloid of the Calabar bean (Physostigma venenosum), a climbing legume of tropical Africa: a reversible cholinesterase inhibitor, used against glaucoma since 1876 and today also as an antidote in anticholinergic poisoning. This family brings together other impurities.

Did you know? Its other name, eserine, comes from éséré, the local name of the bean; in 1935 chemists Percy Lavon Julian and Josef Pikl achieved its first total synthesis.

EDQM standards 1
