Probenecid
A uricosuric drug that helps the kidneys excrete excess uric acid, approved in the United States in 1951 and still used today for gout and hyperuricaemia; it was developed as an alternative to caronamide. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, metabolites, labelled standards and other impurities.
Did you know?It competes with penicillin for the same kidney transporter and slows its elimination: this is why it has been given together with the antibiotic to keep its blood levels higher.
