Pyrazinamide
An antituberculosis drug always used with other medicines, such as isoniazid and rifampicin: synthesised in 1936, it was not used against tuberculosis until 1952. It is a prodrug that the bacterium converts into pyrazinoic acid. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, labelled standards and other impurities.
Did you know?It was tested because it resembles nicotinamide, already known to act against tuberculosis; curiously, in the test tube at neutral pH it has no effect at all on the bacillus.
