Pyronaridine

An antimalarial first synthesised in 1970 that entered clinical use in China in the 1980s: combined with artesunate, a derivative of artemisinin, it is used against malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax. This family brings together the active ingredient, metabolites, labelled standards, nitrosamines and other impurities.

Did you know?In 2017 its combination with artesunate was added to the WHO List of Essential Medicines; the molecule has also been studied as a possible anticancer drug and against the Ebola virus.
