Rosuvastatin
A statin developed in Japan in the 1990s and approved in the early 2000s to lower LDL cholesterol. It blocks HMG-CoA reductase, the enzyme the liver uses to make cholesterol. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, metabolites, labelled standards, nitrosamines, other impurities and synthesis intermediates.
Did you know? The statin story starts with a mould: in the 1970s the Japanese biochemist Akira Endo isolated the first one, mevastatin, from a Penicillium fungus.
