Sildenafil

A phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor born in the late 1980s as a possible medicine for angina. Approved in 1998 for erectile dysfunction, it is also used today for pulmonary arterial hypertension. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, metabolites, labelled standards, nitrosamines and other impurities.

Did you know?In the angina trials the effect on the heart was disappointing, but volunteers reported an unexpected side effect: that is how the fate of the molecule changed.
