Simvastatin
A semi-synthetic statin that lowers cholesterol by blocking the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, first approved in Sweden in 1988 and used to prevent heart attack, stroke and other cardiovascular disease. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, metabolites, labelled standards and other impurities.
Did you know?It derives from lovastatin, discovered in 1978 in the fermentation broth of the fungus Aspergillus terreus: a small change to the side chain makes it about two and a half times more active on the enzyme.
