Thalidomide
An immunomodulator synthesised in the 1950s that acts on the protein cereblon; in the United States it has been approved since 1998 for erythema nodosum leprosum, a painful complication of leprosy, and since 2006 for multiple myeloma. This family brings together the active ingredient, labelled standards and other impurities.
Did you know?In 1964 the physician Jacob Sheskin, in Jerusalem, tried it on a critically ill leprosy patient: after sleeping for hours the man could get out of bed unaided, and that chance discovery led to clinical trials in leprosy.
