Caffeine

A methylxanthine alkaloid found in coffee, tea, cocoa and guarana: it stimulates the nervous system by blocking adenosine receptors and is also used in medicine, for example against apnoea in premature babies. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, labelled standards, nitrosamines and other impurities.

Did you know?It was isolated in 1819 by the German chemist Friedlieb Ferdinand Runge at the suggestion of Goethe, who had given him a box of coffee beans to analyse.
