Dextromethorphan
A cough suppressant of the morphinan family, approved in the United States in 1958 for over-the-counter sale as an alternative to codeine; combined with quinidine it is also used for pseudobulbar affect. This family brings together the active ingredient, pharmacopoeial impurities, labelled standards, nitrosamines and other impurities.
Did you know?It is the mirror image of levomethorphan, the methyl ether of the opioid painkiller levorphanol: the prefix 'dextro' recalls that it rotates polarised light to the right.
